CDS Summer Updates 25-26

Carolina Dining Services (CDS) is thrilled to announce a series of exciting updates and innovations to enhance the dining experience for students, faculty, and staff this fall. From new dining locations to cutting-edge technology and sustainability initiatives, CDS is setting the table for an exciting year.
Introducing Two New Locations
This year, CDS welcomes two brand-new dining venues to campus. We are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of First Draft Deli, a new dining concept set to open this Fall 2025 at the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. First Draft Deli represents an exciting evolution in campus dining, offering a thoughtfully curated menu that reflects our commitment to quality, creativity, and inclusivity in campus dining. Guests can look forward to a variety of bagel breakfast sandwiches, locally roasted coffee, and an array of lunch options that blend new flavors with breakfast classics.
The deli will also feature inclusive menu offerings with vegan, vegetarian, and halal options to ensure everyone can enjoy. For Tar Heels who hold meal plans, plus swipe options will be available.
Café 1789 will be taking over the former Port City Java located in Chase Hall. Named in honor of UNC’s founding year, Café 1789 will be serving locally sourced Larry’s coffee, espresso, teas, as well as breakfast staples and fresh baked goods. This is the perfect spot to relax, study, and meet with friends.
These additions expand the variety of dining options available and reflect CDS’s commitment to meeting the evolving tastes and needs of the Carolina community.
Technological Upgrades and Improved Service
To streamline service and reduce wait times, CDS is rolling out several tech upgrades including Transact mobile ordering, self-service Kiosks, and going cashless campus wide. With the new mobile ordering app, CDS will be moving away from the GET application. The new system will allow students to order ahead of time from their phone, skip the line, and pick up at designated locations. The first dining locations to feature mobile ordering will be Bojangles, Cafe 1789, Ram’s Market/Subway, La Farm, and First Draft Deli. Self Service Kiosks are also available at the aforementioned locations.
As of June 20th, all CDS locations have been cashless making transactions faster and more secure. All dining locations now accept card, FLEX, Carolina Convenience, and mobile payments only.
CDS is introducing a new reusable to-go container system that will launch this fall. This initiative supports Carolina’s sustainability goals by reducing single-use packaging and promoting eco-friendly habits across campus. For students wanting to enjoy their food outside of the dining hall, new upgraded seating will be located behind Lenoir Hall. For those who would like to have a quiet meal, additional seating will be available in the Student Stores next to Barnes and Noble.
