What Is Dining Flex?
What even is Dining Flex? Good question! Your Meal Plan has three parts, and Dining Flex is one of them that can help you add some flexibility to your Meal Plan.
What is Dining Flex?
Dining Flex, the boring story: Dining Flex is a declining balance that is associated with your Meal Plan.
Dining Flex, the fun story: Dining Flex is FOOD MONEY! It works just the way a pre-paid debit card works – add money, then use it to buy FOOD!
What can I use Dining Flex for?
If you’re buying food on campus, you can use Dining Flex to buy it. Dining Flex works at all of our on campus locations – if you want to run into Wendy’s to buy a Frosty on a hot day, use Dining Flex! If you want to grab some snacks and supplies from Rams Market, use Dining Flex! If you want to have a pizza delivered to your residence hall and then cry into it while you study for a final, use Dining Flex!
Does Dining Flex come with my Meal Plan?
The answer to that is . . . sometimes! Our lowest on campus plan, the Block 100 + $200 Dining Flex, automatically comes with, you guessed it, $200 of Dining Flex. None of our other Meal Plans automatically come with it, but you can add Dining Flex whenever you need it throughout the semester as long as you have a Meal Plan.
How do I add Dining Flex?
Adding Dining Flex is easy! Simply log into your OneCard and click on the Add Flex tab at the top of of the page. Type in the amount of Dining Flex you want, and voila! It’s automatically added to your student account and will appear in ConnectCarolina in 3-5 business days. It is ready to use on your OneCard right away.
(Pssst! Sort of like how an ATM can only dispense $20 bills, Dining Flex can only be added in $50 increments. You can choose to add as much or as little as you like, but it better be divisible by $50 without resulting in a fraction or an imaginary number is all we’re saying. See? Your math teacher was right – you ARE using fractions in the real world!)
When does my Dining Flex expire?
NEVER! Well, close to never. Dining Flex rolls over from semester to semester until you graduate, as long as you are a Tar Heel (i.e. you are consistently matriculated at UNC-Chapel Hill for your college career with no breaks [summer breaks don’t count]).
Can I get Dining Flex if I don’t have a Meal Plan?
Nope, Dining Flex is exclusively associated with Meal Plans, so you can only add Dining Flex to your OneCard when you actively have a Meal Plan. If you had Dining Flex leftover from your Meal Plan from the year before but don’t plan on having a Meal Plan this year, no worries – your Dining Flex still rolls over and you can still use it, you just won’t be able to add any more Dining Flex when you run out.
I added Carolina Convenience onto my OneCard – is that Dining Flex?
It’s not! Carolina Convenience and Dining Flex are two different things – here’s a quick breakdown:
Carolina Convenience is managed by our good friends at the OneCard office, and is money that you put on your OneCard (either by cash, check or MasterCard) and that can be used for everything on campus (laundry, textbooks, snacks, etc.)
Dining Flex is managed by Carolina Dining Services and is money that you put on your OneCard (by charging it directly to your student account) and that can be used for purchasing food on campus (for all on campus locations and on campus delivery).
I’m an ADULT! Why can’t I just use my debit card on campus?
Okay, okay, you’re grown – if you feel comfortable using a debit or credit card, you can! We accept Mastercard/Visa and debit at all of our locations. There is no discount for using Dining Flex. Here are some advantages to using Dining Flex instead of a debit card if you’re on the fence about it:
- Dining Flex is convenient! It’s on your OneCard, it works right away when you add it, and you don’t have to worry about carrying an extra card.
- Dining Flex helps you budget! If you need to track how much money you spend on food, Dining Flex helps you with that since it is ONLY for purchasing food.
- Dining Flex is sometimes covered by Financial Aid! If you are receiving a financial aid package while you attend UNC-Chapel Hill, contact the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid to find out if your aid package covers Meal Plans or Dining Flex.
