Meal Plan Policies
FALL 2020 MEAL PLANS:
Meal Plans may be purchased online until Aug. 17, 2020. Meal Plan purchases made after Aug. 17, 2020 must be made in person at the UNC One Card Office. Starting Oct. 19, 2020, any student who did not purchase a Meal Plan in the fall may purchase a Meal Plan for the spring semester. After Jan.12, 2021, all spring Meal Plan purchases must be made in person at the UNC One Card Office.
Meal Plans for the fall semester begin on Monday, Aug. 3 after breakfast, and go through Wednesday, Nov. 25 after breakfast. For the spring semester, Meal Plans start on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021 at brunch and go through Saturday, May 15, 2021 at breakfast. Meal Plans are not available for use during official University holidays and breaks.
Meal Plan Holders may use a maximum of two meals per meal period and there must be at least 15 minutes between first and second orders. Subject to the operating hours of the dining facility, Meal Periods are designated in the dining tracking system as: Breakfast: 5 – 10:59 a.m., Lunch: 11 a.m. – 1:59 p.m., Late Lunch: 2 – 4:59 p.m., Dinner: 5 – 8:59 p.m., Late Night: 9 p.m. – 3 a.m.

Spring meal plan sales start Monday, November 16, 2020 and may be purchased online until Sunday, February 7th, 2021. *
*The Weekly 21, Weekly 14 and Weekly 6 meal plans go on sale 11.16.20 and are open to all students on and off campus. The $300 or $500 Flex Plans go on sale 1.4.21 and are only open to students living off campus, Baity Hill or Ram’s Village.
Any student requesting a cancellation or change after Sunday, February 7th, 2021 must go to the One Card site and click on Meal Plan Appeal Form in the important information box. Meal Plan cancellations, by appeal, will result in prorated refunds to the spring portion of the 2020-21 Meal Plan and will be credited back to the student’s cashiers account based on either the date of cancellation. Meal Plan Appeals may take a few days to process.
All of our residential Weekly Access Meal Plans are annual contracts paid per semester. The fall portion of the contract is billed when a student first purchases the Meal Plan, and the spring semester portion is billed automatically to the student’s account for the spring semester. The student will be billed for the same Meal Plan type in the spring semester unless the Meal Plan is changed or canceled in accordance with these policies.Meal Plans are purchased online at onecard.unc.edu. Charges will appear on the student’s University account billed by Student Accounts and University Receivables.
PLUS Swipes and Meal Swipes
1.27.21: Policy Update for Spring 2021 Plus Swipes
Beginning Thursday, 1.28.21, we are increasing your PLUS Swipes! Instead of only 2 PLUS Swipes per week, all meal plan holders will receive an allowance of (1) PLUS Swipe option per day! (up to allotted meal swipes per your plan).
What does this mean to you?
Weekly 21 = Up to 7 PLUS Swipes per week (1 per day)
Weekly 14 = Up to 7 PLUS Swipes per week (1 per day)
Weekly 6 = Up to 6 PLUS Swipes per week (1 per day)
PLUS Swipes and Meal Swipes do not transfer over from semester to semester. Weekly Access Plans allow for a maximum number of Meal Swipes and PLUS Swipes per week. Meal Swipes and PLUS Swipes are reset early on Thursday morning of each new week and any leftover swipes from previous week will not roll over and expire. For the fall semester, swipes expire on Nov. 25, 2020 after breakfast. For the spring semester, swipes expire on May 15, 2021 after breakfast.
PLUS Swipes may only be utilized for select meals in select Carolina Dining Services (CDS) retail locations. A PLUS Swipe may only be used once per meal period (Breakfast, Lunch, Late Lunch, Dinner and Late Night). Upon utilizing a PLUS Swipe, the Meal Plan participant will be unable to access a CDS dining hall (Top of Lenoir or Chase Dining Hall) for 15 minutes. PLUS Swipes are part of the Meal Plan’s total swipe allotment and not additional meals. All Weekly Access Meal Plans include up to two maximum PLUS Swipe meals per week. (Example: Weekly 21 gives up to 21 Meal Swipes per week. Up to two of the total 21 may be used as a PLUS Swipe. Therefore, you can have 19 meals in the dining halls and 2 PLUS Swipe options at select retailers. Another option could be using 21 swipes in dining halls and no PLUS Swipe meals.)
Flex is money that can be added to a student’s One Card and works like a debit card (declining balance). Flex can only be added to a student’s account if the student is actively enrolled in an On-Campus Meal Plan. Flex can only be used for food purchases includes delivery orders (delivered to an on-campus address) from participating local restaurants and Takeout Central, UNC Student Stores and a number of University Vending machines.
Additional Flex may be purchased online at onecard.unc.edu throughout the year in increments of $50. Charges will appear on the student’s University account billed by Student Accounts and University Receivables.
The last day to add Flex in the fall semester will be Nov.16, 2020. The last day to add Flex in the spring semester will be April 22, 2021.
Flex is non-refundable. At the end of the semester, any leftover Flex will be rolled over to the student’s account for the next semester. This will occur for every semester provided the student continues to be actively and consecutively enrolled at the University. Meal Plans are not available for purchase during the summer; however, students may use any leftover Flex added prior to April 22, 2021. If a student is not actively enrolled in classes, unused Flex from the previous semester will expire.
Changes and Cancellations
Living on campus will be very different this fall, and we believe it is important for you to make the most informed dining decision that suits your individual circumstances. To provide maximum flexibility, all Meal Plan participants may cancel their dining contract for any reason and without penalty through Aug. 2, 2020. Beginning Aug. 3, 2020 (the first day Meal Plans begin) student-initiated Meal Plan cancellations will be accompanied by the standard cancellation costs set forth in the Carolina Dining Services Meal Plan Policies. If you wish to cancel your dining Meal Plan, visit onecard.unc.edu, select “One Card Login” and log in with your ONYEN and password, and then click on “Drop Meal Plan.”
A student may also request to change or cancel their previously selected Meal Plan between Aug.3-17, 2020. Any changes during this time will result in prorated charges to the fall portion of the 2020-21 Meal Plan and will be credited back to the student’s account on a prorated basis at Student Accounts and University Receivables. The new Meal Plan chosen will be billed at the prorated semester price. Fall semester Meal Plan changes can be made up until the end of day on Aug. 17, 2020. There is no charge for the first change during this time; however, there is a $50 processing fee for each change thereafter. After Aug. 17, 2020, all emergencies necessitating account changes will be handled on an individual basis by contacting the UNC One Card Office. If this emergency results in a second Meal Plan change, the student may be required to pay a $50 processing fee. If the emergency results in a Meal Plan cancellation, the student may be required to pay a $250 cancellation fee.
As stated in the “Summary of Changes for Fall 2020” the UNC System issued guidance to all its institutions about the possibility that housing and dining refunds would not be available, particularly without state or federal financial relief, if COVID-19 further impacts students and forces them to leave campuses and return to online learning. Some have interpreted this guidance as a definitive decision not to issue refunds under any circumstance, but that is not accurate. If the UNC System is able to offer financial relief to students-in the form of refunds or other measures-we would certainly like to do so. Regrettably, the current uncertain economic environment and health outlook preclude us from making any definitive decision or commitment now on future refunds. We will provide further information and guidance as we know more. Greek Changes and Cancellations
After Aug. 17, 2020, a student who pledges a fraternity or sorority with a mandatory meal program may change or cancel their Meal Plan. As long as the student provides a dated official letter from the Greek organization to the UNC One Card Office within ONE WEEK of receiving the bid, the student will only be charged a $50 processing fee at the time of cancellation.
Upon change or cancellation, any Meal Plan balance will be credited on a prorated basis to the student’s account at Student Accounts and University Receivables, less the appropriate fees.
Students requesting to cancel their Meals Plans after one week of receiving the bid will be charged a $250 cancellation fee.
Leaving the University and Study Abroad
A student who is no longer studying at the University at the end of the fall semester for any reason (study abroad, graduation, medical leave, dismissal, etc.) has the right to cancel their Meal Plan for the spring semester without charge. The amount charged to the student’s account for the spring semester will be credited in full. Students must provide documentation from the appropriate University office (the Registrar for graduation and the Study Abroad Office for semesters abroad) to the UNC One Card Office by Dec.12, 2020 to receive a full spring refund.
Carolina Dining Services, One Card and University Policies
Per University policy, One Cards are non-transferable. One Cards found to be used by individuals other than to whom they are issued are subject to immediate confiscation by CDS staff and incidents will be reported to the honor system as an honor code violation. In accordance with University community standards and Guidelines on Face Coverings and Face Masks, facial coverings or face masks that cover the mouth and nose should be worn in all group and public settings on campus. Unless you are consuming food or beverage, a face mask must be worn at all times inside a dining location.
In accordance with University community standards and , customers will be asked to follow the 6-foot spacing guidance for lines at dining locations. Seats and tables will be spread out to maintain physical distancing throughout our dining facilities. Please refrain from moving seats and tables so that appropriate physical distancing can be maintained. If University guidance changes, seating spacing will be adjusted accordingly.
For customers’ safety, shirts and shoes must be worn at all times in dining facilities.
Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices, is prohibited in all University facilities.
Meals taken away in to-go containers count as one Meal Swipe. If students wish to eat a meal in the dining hall as well as take a meal to go, they will be charged for two Meal Swipes. Individuals abusing or not complying with this policy may have their to-go privileges suspended. Reusable boxes are not included in Flex plans.
Each Meal Swipe is valid for a single meal period in the dining halls. Individuals who wish to remain in the dining halls over multiple meal periods may be asked to re-swipe their cards.
Individuals are not permitted to solicit in dining facilities.
Outside posters, flyers and other printed materials are not permitted to be posted in dining facilities. All posted materials will either be food service or emergency/health notifications as approved by CDS.
Individuals are expected to comply with all University policies including, but not limited to, those set forth here. Individuals not complying with these policies will be asked to leave the premises.
Modification of Terms
Carolina Dining Services and the UNC One Card Office reserve the right to alter or change any statement contained herein. A current version of these terms is available online at www.onecard.unc.edu or by request at the UNC One Card Office located in UNC Student Stores. The University shall not be responsible for any failure to provide meals in the event conditions exist not wholly within its control (natural disasters, adverse weather, utility outages, fire, strikes, etc.)
