How do I sign up?
Meal Plans for the fall semester are purchased online at www.onecard.unc.edu and will appear on your university bill, along with tuition and housing (if applicable).
Meal Plans can only be purchased online.
Am I required to have a meal plan?
UNC Chapel Hill is unique because all meal plans are voluntary. This means you are not required to purchase a meal plan, even if you live on campus. Therefore, we must earn your business.
Where can I use my meal plan?
Block and Value Meal plans can be used in both all-you-care-to-eat locations: Top of Lenoir and the brand new Rams Head Dining Hall. Carolina Dining Services provides 19 meals per week. You can choose which meals to eat that best fits your schedule.
What is the difference between Value Plans and Block Plans?
Value Plans give you more meals at less cost per semester but they require more discipline because the weekly meals have to be eaten within a seven-day period. Value Plans guarantee you meals from the first day of class to the last day of exams. The meals do not carry over from week to week. Value Meals are non-transferable and may only be used by the meal plan participant. You are permitted access to each meal twice. This will allow you to eat early and then come back before the meal period is over to eat again if you so desire.
Block Plans are meals per semester. You have from the first day of class to the last day of exams to use your allotted meals. You may also purchase meals for guests and use multiple meals per meal period. Block Meal Plans expire at the end of the semester and meals do not carry over.
How do I access my meal plan?
You will access your meal plan accounts using your UNC ONE Card, which is also your student ID, your library card, and really the only card you need on campus. Simply present your card to the cashier for entrance to the all-you-care-to –eat facilities. Your card will be swiped and a meal will be deducted. The new balance will appear on your receipt.
If I purchase a meal plan during fall semester can I change it for spring?
Yes, you did sign up for an annual meal plan. However, Carolina Dining will allow you to change or cancel your spring semester meal plan. Please see the Meal Plan Policies for specific dates.
What is the difference between Dining Flex and Expense?
Dining Flex is available to students with a Value or Block Meal Plan. It is a debit account for food only. Dining Flex can be added to your student account along with your meal plan, housing and tuition costs. Additional Dining Flex may be added during the semester in $50 increments at www.onecard.unc.edu.
Expense can be used anywhere on campus that accepts the UNC ONE card, including: dining locations, vending machines, student stores, student health, copiers, and more. Students using their Expense account in Carolina Dining locations for prepared foods will be exempt from paying the 6.75% sales tax. Your Expense account carries over from semester to semester and your balance is refundable at the end of each academic year. You can set up an Expense account without a meal plan by going online to www.onecard.unc.edu or visiting the UNC ONE Card Office. Expense must be prepaid and credit cards are only accepted via the online payment method.
What if I have a problem regarding my experience at a Carolina Dining Service location?
Carolina Dining offers several ways to deal with dining issues. You can discuss it with a location manager while you are in the facility or our web site is available to email us. We also use comment boards and dining forums for you to let us know how we are doing. Finally, UNC has a Student Dining Board of Directors. Made up of 15 representatives from across campus, this committee meets weekly to discuss dining operations and address student issues. The Dining Board accepts student members who are interested in helping us do a better job in meeting expectations. Check out our web site if you are interested in becoming a member of the Student Dining Board.
If I purchase a Value Plan, when does the week begin and end?
The week begins on a Wednesday and ends on a Tuesday. The cost of the Value Meal Plan takes into consideration that Carolina Dining will not be open for Fall Break, Thanksgiving or Spring Break.
